IMCB HISTOLOGY AND PATHOLOGY
The IMCB Histopathology capabilities are headed by Keith and Susan Rogers with Pathology expertise provided by Dr. Jerrold Ward. There is a full range of routine histology equipment for “self service” use as well as a fully equipped laboratory operated through Biopolis Shared Facilities (BSF). All facilities are located on the 6th floor of Proteos.

Dr. Ward received his DVM from Cornell University and PhD in Comparative Pathology from The University of California at Davis. He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP). Dr. Ward has spent much of his career in veterinary pathology employed by the US federal government.
He was at the National Cancer Institute in several programs in toxicology (cancer drug development), chemical carcinogenesis and laboratory animal pathology. Dr. Ward was in the original NCI Carcinogenesis Bioassay Program in the 1970s testing environmental chemicals that led, in part, to the present National Toxicology Program.
For the past 15 years much of his work has involved pathology support of cancer and infectious disease research often involving genetically engineered mice. He is presently a consultant in veterinary pathology. His special interests include pathology of the lymphoid system, liver, and GI tract, tumor pathology and immunohistochemistry. He is a co-author of over 400 publications, over 50 book chapters and has co-edited several books.
Dr. Ward is on the Editorial Boards of Toxicologic Pathology , Veterinary Pathology and Experimental and Toxicologic Pathology. He is presently a committee member of STP’s international pathology classifications for the immune system and liver. Dr. Ward is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for newly established Center for Genomic Pathology.
Publications – He was editor of “Pathology of Genetically-engineered Mice”, and co-editor of “Pathology of the Aging Mouse”. He was co-author of the NCI mouse models of Human Cancer Consortium’s tumor classifications for the lymphoid and myeloid systems, prostate and gastrointestinal and respiratory systems. His most popular publications include those on identifying new infectious agents of animals including Helicobacter hepaticus infection in mice, Helicobacter bilis in rats, a pailloma virus of rats and feline infectious peritonitis in cats. He also identifed new diseases due to Sendai and Mouse hepatitis virus infections of mice. His many publications have involved the full spectrum of medical research including phenotyping new genetically-engineered mice, tumor pathology, and the uses of rodents in toxicology, carcinogenesis, immunology, infectious diseases, drug and vaccine development and aging. He has almost 400 publications plus many book chapters to his name.

IMCB Self Service Histology Laboratory

The laboratory operates an open access policy. All equipment can be used on a first come basis, booking is by calendar located next to each piece of equipment. Full training is available on request, all enquiries should be directed to Susan Rogers.
Users are asked to follow normal laboratory practice and safety rules and also to leave the equipment clean after use. Please report any equipment failure promptly. IMCB Histopathology laboratory also offers the following equipment for use under the guidance of experience technical staff:
